The Cure for Uncertainty

If you’re feeling shaken after the election and more uncertain than you’ve ever felt, you’re not alone. Many felt they had certainty in the future and were sure their candidate would win. In your personal life, you may be facing uncertainty as well; an unexpected illness, pregnancy or move now seems inevitable. The best way to deal with uncertainty is to accept it as part of life. Instead of making yourself a victim of the change, begin to plan for it. Coping with uncertainty requires an action plan. Below are suggestions to help you move forward:

  1. Focus on what you can create instead of expecting anyone to give you something you want. Becoming bitter and dwelling on the past keeps you stuck. If you want a more secure future, make decisions that will move you forward rather than expecting someone else to help you.

  2. Change your mindset. What seems to be a failure is often an opportunity. For example, having to move may not be what you wanted or expected, but it can bring new opportunities, a better job, and a better social life.

  3. Focus on what you can control. Sometimes you worry so much about what’s happening to you that you forget your decisions are defining your future. You have control over what you eat, how you take care of yourself, what you say to others, and the people you attract to yourself. No president, move, or unexpected illness can rob you of who you are and how you cope.

  4. Maintain confidence in your ability to cope with uncertainty. Remind yourself that you are capable of taking care of your life by remembering past success. What’s the worst thing that can happen? Ask yourself this question and create an action plan; your plan may include downsizing, working smarter, or reconnecting with family and friends. Having a plan will help you feel confident and in control during insecure times.

  5. Practice stress reduction and mindfulness. Stress happens and is part of life, but excessive stress also leads to illness and premature death. Simple measures, such as keeping a gratitude journal, can help restore your faith in people and develop a more positive outlook.

The uncertainty of life will always exist. If you feel you’ve lived a predictable life up until this moment, you’ve lived an illusion. Nothing stays the same, and that includes you and I.
