5 Great Date Ideas for Valentine's Day in Houston

Hi, Mary Jo,

What advice do you have for parents who don’t usually go on date night but are wanting to go out for Valentine’s Day?

Connie

Dear Connie,

I’m sure friends and Google have ideas, but these are my personal favorites. They add three important keys to great relationships: teamwork, communication (talking and listening opportunity), and novelty…which means excitement!

Before you begin, talk about creating a “no-phone” night. One parent will need to keep theirs on silent in the event of an emergency at home (responsible parenting) but, outside of that, keep the phones away from your date.

  1. If you enjoy art and culture, sneak away to an art gallery or get lost in the museum. Enjoy the art and conversation, and then finish the evening at a small, inexpensive café.

  2. The Honeymoon Café downtown is a must. It’s decorated in black and white with a New Orleans big, easy attitude. A variety of coffees and an incredible menu are wonderful Valentine’s Day treats. It’s a great escape any time of the day.

  3. Try to escape from the Escape Room! These have popped up all over Houston, and they’re a great date for couples looking for excitement. The goal is to find the key to unlock the room using hidden clues. It forces you to cooperate and, in the worst-case scenario, you’re alone together for two hours!

  4. Walk or drive to a beach or park and watch a sunset together. If you can’t do that, take a walk, enjoy the moonlight, and talk. Keep your conversation about the two of you…no finances, kids, or politics allowed.

  5. Indulge in a couple’s massage. This is a treat for both men and women, and you will both leave feeling calm and relaxed.

The best thing you can give your children is a healthy marriage between you and your partner. Date nights are something you do for yourselves and your children. Don't feel guilty...go on a date.
